Lawn care tips for central NJ
A few simple guidelines so your lawn stays healthy and your crew can do their best work.
When to aerate in NJ
Late summer into early fall (August–September) is ideal for core aeration in central New Jersey. The soil is still warm, grass recovers quickly, and you can follow up with overseeding. Spring aeration is possible but often competes with weed pressure; we recommend fall when you can.
Mowing height
Keep your mower blade high — 3 to 3½ inches for most cool-season grasses in NJ. Longer grass shades the soil, holds moisture better, and crowds out weeds. Never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single cut.
Fertilization timing
In central NJ, the main feeding windows are early spring (green-up), late spring, early fall, and late fall (before dormancy). Avoid heavy nitrogen in peak summer heat. If you’re on a plan with us, we’ll schedule applications for you.
Watering
Deep, infrequent watering beats light daily sprinkles. Aim for about an inch per week, including rain, in the early morning. If you have irrigation, we can help with repair and winterization so it’s ready when you need it.
